Bombay High Court Upholds Music Licensing Authority of PPL

In a recent ruling, the Bombay High Court affirmed the music licensing authority of prominent entities Phonographic Performance Ltd. (PPL) and Novex Communications Pvt. Ltd. (Novex), asserting their rights as copyright owners. The court’s decision eliminates the necessity for these organizations to register as copyright societies.

G B Aayeer, the Managing Director and CEO of PPL, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, stating that it not only marks a victory for PPL but also for the entire music industry. He emphasized that the verdict reinforces the rights of copyright owners and exclusive licensees, equipping PPL with the necessary tools to combat widespread infringement that undermines legitimate music labels’ investments.

Aayeer further elaborated that the ruling resolves a longstanding debate regarding the extent of owner rights in licensing sound recordings. He emphasized the significance of honoring and safeguarding the creative efforts that propel the music industry forward, ensuring a future where investors in copyrights, artists, and their creations receive due recognition and protection.
